The Dome in the T&G Building
Napier was rebuilt after the devastating Hawke’s Bay earthquake in 1931. Now internationally known as the Art-Deco capital of the world, nowhere else can you see such a variety and concentration of buildings in this distinctive style. The T&G Building sits proudly on the corner of Marine Parade and Emerson Street – directly opposite the Sound Shell and its expanse of gardens. Completed in 1935, the building was originally the home of Temperance & General Insurance, a company which emerged during the Prohibition Era in the early 1900’s. Built in the stripped classical style, this Napier icon is characterised by a distinctive domed roof, complete with clock faces. Recently converted into exclusive residential apartments, the Dome penthouse apartments are now Napier’s most exclusive address. With a commanding bird’s eye view from mountain ranges to Mahia Peninsula and across Hawke's Bay to Cape Kidnappers and beyond, this is the complete package of luxury and location.
